SPEAKING OF BEING IRISH:
This one is for you Noa.
Okay, so I dont know if you all know how my family name became Callahan.
My family immigrated from Irland during the potato fammine. Before they came to Newfoundland, my ancestors were known as the O'Callahan's. But when they got to NF, they decided that they wanted to start a new life for themselves and leave all the misery they experienced in the past behind them. One way to do this, was to distance themselves from their Irish herritage. So when they arrived on the rock, they dropped the O and became just Callahan. Hoping that when people got to know their name, they would not associate it with being Irish.
Nowadays, I still tell people that I am Newfie first. Because my heart belongs to that rock and thats where many of my immediate family spent a lot of their life. Then if people ask where my family came before that, then I tell them I am Irish.
Now that I think about it, that probably why I dont have any Irish luck, because I never think of myself as Irish.
